Lister Metropolis to set up PET scan facility

M. Ramesh

Chennai , March 4

THE process of detecting diseases will go hi-tech in Chennai city after Lister Metropolis Laboratory & Research Centre Pvt Ltd completes its Rs 30-crore expansion project.

A key part of the expansion is the PET scan facility, the cutting edge technology in diagnostics. (Positron emission tomography, also called PET imaging or PET scan, is a technique used to create images that show anatomical structure as well as how certain tissues perform their physiological functions. The images of the human body developed by this technique are used to evaluate a variety of diseases.)

At present, only Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai has this facility, although a few others in the country have plans to buy the equipment.

With this, Lister Metropolis intends to move into all branches of diagnostics— pathology, radiology (X-ray, CT scan, MRI scan, ultrasound and mammography) and molecular imaging. A 28,000 sq ft building is coming up next to Lister's unit in Nungambakkam. The company will operate from the new premises from next year.

Lister Metropolis Laboratory came into being when Metropolis Health Services (India) Pvt Ltd of Mumbai took a 50 per cent stake in Lister Laboratories in 2001.

Asked how the project cost was being funded, Dr P. Srinivasan, Managing Director of Lister Metropolis, told Business Line that the Rs 20-crore PET scan centre would be put up by a company called DCA Metropolis India Pvt Ltd. DCA Metropolis is a joint venture between Metropolis Health Services and DCA Molecular Imaging. DCA molecular imaging itself is a joint venture between Diwan Chand Agarwal group of Delhi and Molecular Imaging of the US.

Dr Srinivasan said that Lister Metropolis had recently kicked off a few initiatives. One was `home service' where even X-ray and ECG could be done at homes. Another was on-site testing services for companies, where testing is done at its offices. This service has particularly been found useful at recruitments, as the candidates successful in interviews can undergo medical examination "in the next room".
