Power `AP free power taking toll on transformers' Our Bureau
Hyderabad , March 4 THERE has been a steep rise in failure of electrical transformers in Andhra Pradesh following the implementation of the free power supply scheme to farmers. According to the State Finance Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, as many as 38,000 transformers failed in the last two months as against 36,000 during the entire 2004 calendar year. Replying to a question during the question hour in the Legislative Assembly on Friday, Mr Rosaiah said that the coming months would be the critical period as the demand for power was expected to rise during the summer season. In February itself, the demand had gone up to 157 million units a day, leading to a heavy load on the distribution system. Keeping in view the rise in transformer failure, he said that APTransco had kept adequate number of transformers at the disposal of district officials for replacement of failed transformers within 48 hours, the time limit prescribed in the Citizen's Charter. The Minister also assured the House that efforts would be made to ensure seven hours per day continuous supply of power to agricultural pumpsets.
