TDP walkout over irrigation contract

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , March 4

THE members of the opposition Telugu Desam Legislature Party (TDLP) staged a walkout in the State Assembly on Friday, alleging payment of kickbacks to the tune of Rs 170 crore in the sanction of tenders for the Rs 1,548.42-crore Nettempadu Irrigation Project.

Denying the allegations, the Minister for Major Irrigation, Mr P. Lakshmaiah, said tenders were invited for undertaking civil works and installing pumping stations on EPC/turnkey basis, and the price bids would be opened on March 14 and 18, respectively.

Replying to a question raised by Mr C. Laxma Reddy of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi during Question Hour, the Minister said administrative sanction for Rs 50 crore was accorded last year for stage one of the project, covering an ayacut of 27,000 acres. He said the entire project would be completed by 2009.

TDLP Deputy Leader Mr N. Janardhana Reddy demanded that the Shivakumar report that dealt with irregularities committed in the execution of irrigation projects be tabled in the House.

Speaking to newspersons following his party's walkout from the House, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, also said he had information that the Shivakumar report contained information with regard to irregularities committed in all irrigation projects launched by the Congress Government in the State.
