Rubber firms up as arrivals dip

Kottayam , March 4

SPOT rubber prices firmed up followed by acute shortage of the raw material as the lean production period falls in February and March due to extreme dry spell.

According to reports, tapping has slowed down almost by 65-75 per cent in all plantation areas.

At the same time, growers prefer to hold their produce since the overseas markets are ruling high. Covering groups continued to offer better quotes and RSS 4 closed at Rs 54.50 against Rs 54 a kg at Kottayam and Kochi.

The NMCE rubber futures maintained a steady trend on Friday. The March contract was traded at Rs 54.65 (Rs 54.48), April contract at Rs 57.31(Rs 57.36), May contract at Rs 59.29 (Rs 59.29) and June at Rs 60.30 (Rs 60.40) per kg for RSS 4. Transactions were low. RSS 3 improved to Rs 57.11 from Rs 56.94 a kg at Bangkok.

Spot rubber prices (a kg) were: RSS-4: Rs 54.50 (Rs 54); RSS-5: Rs 53.50 (Rs 53); ungraded: Rs 52.75 (Rs 52); ISNR 20: Rs 53.75 (Rs 53.25) and latex 60 per cent: Rs 40 (Rs 39.50).
