MR Sharad Haksar's 1pointsize proved a giant-killer to become the Agency of the Year at Ad Club Madras' `Spark 2005' awards.

The agency, created nearly three years ago to distinguish between Mr Haksar's photography and advertising clients, beat its nearest rival, Mudra-South, by 100 points (the latter got 105).

JWT Bangalore, which won the last two editions, was pushed to the third place as 1pointsize dominated categories such as POP, typography and photography. In fact, 1pointsize, a surprise number three in 2004, bagged all the awards in the photography category: two bronzes, a silver and a gold.

Mr Haksar's daughter Aarushie, the `child mascot,' was there to pick up every award.

Mr Ananthanarayanan of the agency won the `Copywriter of the Year'award, while Mr C.P. Sajan was adjudged the `Art Director of the Year'.

The chief guest, Mr N. Murali, Joint Managing Director, The Hindu, handed over the `Agency of the Year' award to 1pointsize.

Mr Haksar told Business Line that his agency had been doing good work for Perry Alley for the last three years, and it was "nice to get recognition finally." He said the presence of Mr Pushpinder Singh of Ambience Publicis as the Chairman of the jury brought more transparency to the judging process.

Seventy agencies, three more than last year, participated in the awards, which attracted 820 entries, compared with 712 last year.

The crowd too was bigger and more animated. "This year, we decided to move over from the Image auditorium, which has a capacity of 1,200, to the Kamaraj Memorial Hall, which can accommodate about 1,700," said Mr V. Kalidas, Madras Ad Club President.

Volunteers dressed as firemen and an onstage image of a fire engine reinforced the theme of Spark 2005 — `A showcase of hot ideas'.

In all, 56 awards — 24 Gold, 18 Silver and 14 Bronze trophies — were decided by a jury headed by Mr Singh. In his video address to the gathering, he said that, while awards were not an end in themselves, winning them was indeed a route to progress for the avant-garde creative professionals.

The Chairman's `Best of Show' award, introduced this year, was also bagged by 1pointsize for its work for Perri Alley.

Linterland came fourth while rmg david, participating for the first time, was placed fifth, boosted by Golds in Web advertising and corporate identity.

There was also a significant jump in the radio category, which this year witnessed 55 entries compared with 15 in 2004.
