THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The second phase of the State Government's Animal Disease Control Project, `Goraksha,' will be launched this month-end in a bid to cover the entire cattle population in the State, the Agriculture Minister, Ms K.R. Gouri, told newspersons here.

The first phase was launched on October 15 last year with an assistance of Rs 35 crore from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and had been carried on with till November 4. It was implemented in all districts except Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta. The free vaccination programme was aimed at promoting cattle-rearing and milk production in the State.

The vaccine chosen for the project was Raksha `O' Vac from Indian Immunologicals Ltd., Hyderabad, a subsidiary of the NDDB. The target was to cover 85 per cent of the `susceptible population' of cows, buffaloes, goats and sheep in the first phase of the programme. However, the achievement was only 52 per cent
