`Coconut palms withstood tsunami'

Our Bureau

MANGALORE: Coconut palms withstood the impact of the December 26 tsunami along the coastline of India, says Dr V. Rajagopal, Director of Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) at Kasaragod in Kerala.

A CPCRI team, led by Dr Rajagopal, conducted a study on `Impact of tsunami on coastal ecosystems of India' at tsunami-affected areas during January-February. In his study, Dr Rajagopal said coconut palms withstood the impact of gushing water and high salinity to survive the natural calamity.

However, yellowing of outer whorls of leaves in older palms, button shedding, bunch buckling and uproot of seedlings were observed in some places. He said a green belt with casuriana, coconut and poovarasu trees along the coast of Naluvethapathy village in Nagapattinam saved it from tsunami to a large extent.

Dr Rajagopal said certain long-term and short-term strategies could be followed for the restoration of tsunami-affected areas. According to him, coconut planting along the seacoast should be encouraged. Coconut-based mixed farming should be adopted along the coast.
