Poultry Summer jitters for table egg trade G. Gurumurthy
Coimbatore , March 7 THE `summer' syndrome may affect the table egg trade. A less than normal egg consumption is expected to pressure the price, thus hitting layer egg farms and trade. The lower shelf-life of the eggs during hot weather is likely to make the trade go for forced sale to liquidate stocks quickly over the next few weeks, egg trade sources said. The egg trade across the State has chosen to retain last week's farm-gate price this week too at Rs 1.40 apiece. This is a drop of 20 paise from last month's peak rate of Rs 1.60. "We anticipate that the egg in the State will continue to witness selling pressure for the next two months in view of the expected fall in consumption levels. Heat conditions and the onset of examinations for the students followed by the school holidays would be good enough reasons for the egg trade to see a drop in demand and the prices to ease further," the trade sources said. Summer vacation in Tamil Nadu schools would deprive the table egg trade (in the form of noon-meal egg supply) a straight 10 lakh eggs a day or roughly 10 per cent of the production for which the trade will have to find an alternative market place. The steady export from the State in recent times has, however, helped the layer sector to keep its profit ratio in tact. The average monthly shipment of eggs reported from Namakkal region during 2004 calendar, according to the egg trade, worked out to 111 containers amounting to five crore eggs.
