Our Bureau

VISAKHAPATNAM: Three persons, claiming to be Maoists, attacked the Annavaram railway station in East Godavari district and destroyed the computer signalling system as well as the reservation counter on Sunday night in protest against the arrest of a top leader at Rajahmundry earlier in the day, according to railway sources.

The sources said the three had arrived at around midnight, ordered the railway staff out and blasted the signalling system.

They then damaged the reservation counter and left a note saying that they had resorted to the action in protest against the arrest of Mr K. Seshagiri Rao alias Gopanna alias Vinod at Rajahmundry earlier in the day.

Mr Gopanna was picked up from a hotel at Rajahmundry. He was produced in the court on Monday and remanded to custody till March 18.

He was wanted in several cases of murder and arson in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa, according to the East Godavari police.

Several trains on the Visakhapatnam-Visakhapatnam stretch were delayed on Sunday and Monday. The railway sources put the damage at Rs 7 lakh.
