New Delhi , March 8

ON International Women's Day (March 8), two women scientists, Dr K. Seethalakshmi and Dr Mira Shiva, have been selected for the National Award for Women's Development Through Application of Science and Technology for the year 2004.

Dr K. Seethalakhshmi of Tree Physiology Sustainable National and Plantation Forest Management Division, Kerala Forest Research Institute, has been selected for her contribution in the development and value-addition of bamboo resources. She has adapted the technology packages, leading to empowerment of women at the grass-root level.

For Dr Mira Shiva of Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI), Delhi, the award comes as recognition of her efforts in campaigning and advocating issues such as women's health, gender concerns and enactment of law to stop misuse of medical technology for sex determination of the child.
