Chilli glut in Ramanathapuram

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: Ramanathapuram has recorded a glut in chilli harvest this year.

The variety cultivated in the district is famous and demanded for its quality in the State and outside.

The crop has been raised in about 22,622 hectares in the district, helped by copious rains.

Ten kg of chilli fetch between Rs 250 and Rs 300 at present and traders from other districts have evinced interest in bidding in the market.

The variety, `Mundu vathal' is exported to Sri Lanka.

The traders purchase chilli from the farmers and sell them at a higher price in the open market.

The prices offered are much higher compared to last year.

The glut, however, is said to have pegged the price down currently but farmers are hopeful of getting better and reasonable prices this year, the sources said.
