Education MAHE launches programme to create Rs 300-cr endowment Our Bureau
Manipal , March 8 THE Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), a deemed university, has launched a programme of creating an endowment of Rs 300 crore. Addressing presspersons at Manipal in Udupi district on Tuesday, the MAHE Vice-Chancellor, Dr H.S. Ballal, said that Rs 100 crore of this amount is earmarked for the treatment of poor patients in its hospitals, Rs 100 crore for the promotion of research activities, and the rest for awarding scholarships to meritorious students. MAHE has also been giving matching grants to the donations made by the public for charitable purposes, especially in healthcare and education, to improve the social conditions in the region. Dr Ballal said that MAHE has branch campuses at Melaka in Malaysia, and Dubai and Oman in West Asian regions. It is planning to open a branch campus in Sri Lanka. He said the academy is setting up an Institute of Jewellery Management. This institute will offer degree and diploma courses in jewellery design and management. MAHE's engineering curricula are in tune with the current demands of the industry, he said. To a query on the reported suggestion of the Medical Council of India (MCI) to derecognise Kasturba Medical College (KMC), a constituent of MAHE, he said MCI is only the recommendatory body. The Union Health Ministry has to take a decision in this regard. Though it has been mentioned as `recommended for de-recognition' for Kasturba Medical colleges in Mangalore and Manipal in the MCI website, the Health Ministry website showed them as recognised colleges. MAHE has requested the Health Ministry to solve the issue, he said. The first convocation of MAHE will be held at Manipal on March 11. Dr Rajagopala Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Union Government, will deliver the convocation address, Dr Ballal added.
