Aquaculture Call to exploit export potential of tuna fish Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , March 8 TUNA is a largely unexploited resource and therefore the Indian seafood industry should gear up to exploit the species, especially in the wake of the recent setbacks suffered by theshrimp exporters, Mr G. Mohan Kumar, Chairman of the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), has said. He was speaking to reporters here in the fishing harbour on Tuesdayafter examining the tuna catch in a trawler. He commended the efforts of the local seafood exporters in teaming up to take up tuna fishing. Eight trawlers, which hitherto used to take up shrimp fishing, had been converted to take up tuna fishing. "They have formed a consortium and Rs 35 lakh has been spent for conversion of each vessel,'' Mr Mohan Kumar said. He said there was great demand for tuna fish, especially in Japan, but the handling of the fish posed many great difficulties. "To throw light on the fishing techniques, on-board handling methods and to highlight the business potential, MPEDA is organising a seminar here on Wednesday,'' he said.
