Budget proposals

Certain provisions on direct taxes have comes as a shock to individuals and companies. One is the decision to impose fringe benefits tax. With the stiff competition among companies, fringe benefits are necessary to improve work performance.

The proposal to disallow certain expenditure with certain percentage is nothing but double taxation like dividend tax. Further, there is the proposal to disallow 50 per cent of sales promotion and publicity expenditure, which suffers service tax and income-tax at the hands of media and agencies.

The Finance Minister should look over such provisions and consider a removing them.
