New Delhi , March 9

INDIA'S tele-density breached the nine-per cent mark at the end of February as the mobile subscriber base went up by 1.67 million new users. The total mobile subscriber base stood at 51.4 million, while the fixed line user base was 45.5 million.

Cellular operators using the Global System for Mobile (GSM) technology added 1.13 million new users. The growth in February, however, dipped marginally compared to January when 1.8 million new mobile users were added.

Bharti Cellular, with 4.1 lakh new users, added the highest number of mobile users, followed by Reliance Infocomm with 3.7 lakh new users. Reliance is the largest operator in the country with a total subscriber base of over 10.8 million mobile users, according to numbers released by telecom industry associations.

Bharti is the second largest mobile service provider with 10.6 million cellular users. BSNL , which added 1.4 lakh new users, is at the third spot with 8.8 million mobile users.

According to the data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, 2.1 million new telephones (including fixed line) were added in February. A total of 20.85 million subscribers have been added during the first 11 months of the financial year 2004-05. About 17.8 million mobile subscribers have been added during the period.

On the fixed line telephony front, about 3.9 lakh new users have been added in February, taking the total subscriber base to 45.5 million.

TRAI said that the broadband subscriber base has touched 50,000 connections and with further reduction in tariff, the numbers are expected to grow much faster.
