Indonesian vaccine co seeks support for WHO re-listing

Nithya Subramanian

New Delhi , March 9

INDONESIAN pharmaceuticals company, BioPharma, is keen on reviving its arrangements with Indian companies for the supply of bulk polio vaccine.

BioPharma's supply of the bulk vaccine to India was affected after the World Health Organisation (WHO) dropped the company's products from its list last year.

The Indonesian Health Minister, Ms Siti Fadilah Supari, during a recent meeting with the Health Minister, Dr A. Ramadoss, had sought India's support to re-list the vaccines. Representations were also made to look at the possibility of sourcing from BioPharma once again.

The Government has acceded to the request and set up a team comprising officials of the regulatory bodies of India and Indonesia. "The joint team will inspect BioPharma's facilities and work towards convincing the WHO to re-list the vaccines," said Government officials.

"WHO had dropped the vaccine as there were short-comings in the manufacturing practices and storage. Hence companies in India such as Panacea Biotec, Haffkine Biopharmaceutical Corporation and Bharat Immunology and Biologicals Ltd stopped sourcing from BioPharma," they added.

BioPharma supplied about 40 per cent of the bulk polio vaccines to these companies, which later manufactured formulations. With the WHO ruling, the companies turned to other suppliers. Globally, Aventis Pasteur and GSK are present in this segment.

Representatives of the companies manufacturing these vaccines said that non-procurement from BioPharma has not impacted the production or the overall vaccine programme. "We have many other bulk suppliers and the national immunisation programme is not under threat," a top Indian pharma company official said.
