Training to set up orchards in Pudukottai dt

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) conducted a month-long training programme on orchard establishment and value-addition of fruits for a select group of farmers at its premises in Vamban in Pudukottai district.

The district has a good percentage of current and fallow lands i.e. 23 per cent and 9 per cent respectively. The soil with acidic laterite provides immense opportunity to establish horticultural plantations, offering scope for commercial cultivation in the district.

The training sought to lay emphasis on soil testing, selection of site, selection of fruit crops, improved nursery technologies, soil, water and fertilizer management, plant protection, integrated farming system and preservation fruits. They were also informed on improved package of practices and on farm equipment etc, a release from KVK said.
