Asian soaps meet to discuss wide-ranging issues

Mumbai , March 10

THE Asian Conference on Soaps, Detergents and Cosmetics to be held for the first time in India has attracted wide attention. Organised by the Oil Technologists Association of India (Western Zone), the conference will bring together all players in the soaps, detergents and cosmetics industries in the Asian region.

Over 275 delegates are expected to participate in the three-day event, to be held in Goa during March 13-16. Among the participants, there will be at least 65 overseas delegates, mainly from countries in South-East Asia.

A special feature of the conference would be the participation of nearly 40 students studying oils and fats technology. "We want to create an opportunity for students to not only participate in the event but also interact with experts from the industry within the country and outside, and thus encourage a new generation of technologists and technocrats," Mr S.N. Trivedi, Organising Secretary, told Business Line.

The conference will examine the changing paradigm in the homecare, personal care and beauty industries in Asia. Commercial, environmental and regulatory issues would also be discussed. The changing marketplace and raw materials scenario, as also emerging technologies, will be the focus of attention.

The soaps, detergents and cosmetics industries have shown strong growth in recent years, especially in Asia, because of rising incomes and population growth. Also, the level of awareness among consumers about these products is increasing, which is both a challenge and an opportunity for players.

Senior representatives of top corporates such as Unilever, Sara Lee, Colgate Palmolive, Proctor & Gamble, ICI and Godrej will make expert presentations. Product manufacturers from India and abroad, technologists and entrepreneurs are registered delegates.

A roadmap for the future growth of the industries is likely to emerge.
