THE Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and malaria has decided to grant $18.2 million to the Population Foundation of India to support patients who are on anti-retroviral (ARV) therapy.
Speaking to newspersons, Mr Taufiqur Rahman, Fund Portfolio Manager, Global Fund, said, "This is the first time that the Fund has signed with a non-governmental organisation."
This offering is part of the fourth round of funding of the $140-million released to the country. It has so far committed $450 million for combating HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria.
Mr A.R. Nanda, Executive Director of the Population Foundation, said that the programme under the foundation would complement the free ARV initiative started by National AIDS Control Organisation in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Nagaland and Manipur.
It will work with other partners such as INP+ (the Indian network of People living with HIV/AIDS), Freedom Foundation, Engender Health and the Confederation of Indian Industry.
During the first year, support services would be given to 45,000 people living with HIV/AIDS and over a period of five years, the project will reach out to 1.37 lakh people.
