`Raise exemption limit for service tax turnover'

Our Correspondent

Madurai , March 10

THE Tamil Nadu Weights and Measures Manufacturers, Dealers and Repairers Association, here, while welcoming the exemption up to Rs 4 lakh on service turnover, has appealed for raising the limit to Rs 12 lakh.

In a letter to Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, the President of the Association, Mr K.R. Rajendran, has said the small service providers are mostly self-employed people who earn by rendering services to maintain their families and meet day-to-day overheads. They are paid for the services carried out only after negotiation by the service receivers.

Further, they are not in a position to employ staff to collect service tax, maintain accounts thereof, make remittances and submit returns.

The increase in the exemption limit of service turnover at least up to Rs 12 lakh would be really of benefit and relief to the self-employed service providers throughout the country. The rate of tax may be lowered to 5 per cent so that it would not be a burden to the taxpayers, he added.
