Singapore Airlines, Boeing tie up for online connectivity in flights

Mumbai , March 11

SINGAPORE Airlines has taken online connectivity services on-board its flights in a tie-up with Boeing.

Passengers flying Singapore Airlines can now stay connected, 35,000 feet in the air thanks to the introduction of Connexion, an inflight broadband service by BoeingSM, that provides passengers with real-time, high-speed and secure Internet connectivity inflight.

Singapore Airlines launched the new service on its daily Singapore-London flights (SQ320 and SQ321) on March 7, and will introduce this service progressively to other long haul flights.

A statement sent from onboard its inaugural flight with the Net service, said that the service would enable passengers with a wireless-enabled laptop to send and receive emails and connect real-time with their corporate virtual private network as if they are on the ground.

The statement quoting an airline official said: "This new Internet service opens up a whole new world of entertainment, information and business options for our customers. Clearly, we are not stopping here and will continue to add new applications to further enhance the system."

Besides providing broadband connectivity service, Singapore Airlines' customers will be the first to view live TV onboard an international flight. Four channels of live TV, featuring international news providers, will be available for viewing via passengers' laptops from June 2005.

In later phases, live TV will be available in every seat.

Customers can opt for either the fixed rate plan called `Internet Flight' or a pay-as-you-use `Internet Minutes' plan. The prices, set by Connexion, vary from $14.95 for unlimited usage up to three hours under the Internet Flight plan, to $0.25 per minute available for three-six hours use under the Internet Minutes plan.

The airline has come up with promotional offers for passengers signing up for the plans during the first two weeks of the launch. Users can register online for the service whilst inflight on www.connexionbyboeing.com.
