Tea Record prices for teas at speciality auction P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , March 12 TEAS were sold for record prices at the speciality tea auctions held at the Coonoor Tea Trade Association here on Saturday. A kg of Nonsuch "Buds only" tea was sold for the highest-ever price of Rs 3,300 by Forbes and Co (tea brokers), Coonoor, at the auctions, organised by the Nilgiri Planters' Association (NPA). "We bought this chest of 15 kg for Subodh Bros in Kolkata. The teas would be exported to Germany," the representative of the buyers, Kumar and Co, told Business Line. Ten kg of Welbeck Golden Tips organic teas were bought by Puja for Rs 2,450 a kg from Carrit Moran & Co P Ltd. A chest of 7.5 kg of Upasi Silver Tips Teas was bought for Rs 2,150. The buyer Sunil of Kamat said that the teas would be shipped to Oman. The teas were sold by Contemporary Tea Auctioneers P Ltd. Eleven lots out of the 57 lots offered at the sale fetched prices over Rs 1,000 a kg. Nine lots got Rs 500 to 999 a kg. The Garswood Silver Tips Teas emerged as the top price fetcher amidst the bought leaf factories fetching Rs 1,100 a kg. Jayanthilal and co bought the chest on offer consisting of 5.5 kgs sold by Contemporary Tea Auctioneers P Ltd. Of the 4,493 kgs of such high-priced orthodox Nilgiri teas offered for sale, 81 per cent was sold. The total value of the teas sold in just an hour's time was Rs 17.88 lakhs. "Most of the teas bought today were for exports," said Mr TGB Pinto, NPA Chairman.
