Channels not paying up for cricket footage: DD

Nithya Subramanian

New Delhi , March 12

IT has been a slow wicket as far as efforts by national broadcaster Prasar Bharati to stop illegal footage of the India-Pakistan series are concerned.

Despite issuing caution notices and sending out letters to broadcasters against unauthorised use of the footage, Prasar Bharati on Saturday said that several channels have used match sound bites for periods longer than what was permitted by it.

Except NDTV, TV Today, ESPN-Star Sports and Zee News, none of the other broadcasters have so far agreed to pay Doordarshan for the footage used. Soon after the first test match concluded, top officials in Prasar Bharati on Saturday sought legal opinion on the action that could be taken against the violators.

"Most of the channels have exceeded the two-minute per day free cap and have been promoting cricket-based shows. We had asked television monitoring agency TAM India to monitor various channels," said Prasar Bharati in a statement.
