Gas pipeline

This refers to the article "India to go ahead with pact for gas .....". The Centre's initiative to secure our energy needs through assured supply of gas from via pipe-lines from Iran, Myanmar and Turkmenistan is welcome. However, caution must be exercised on the other proposed pipe-line from Iran to India through Pakistan.

The Petroleum Minister,Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, in his zeal to create history should be careful not to enter into contracts with potential rogue countries. Guarantees by international agencies will not protect us from potential threats or breach of contract by either Pakistan or Iran under changed environments in the future.

The potential threat of having a pipeline through Pakistan or volatile Afghanistan warrants examining alternative avenues. Calculations show that the landed price of Myanmar gas is more than that received in Compressed Natural Gas form. This negates the need for an expensive pipeline project.
