THE Indian Institute of Information and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K) and the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras are jointly conducting a two-day workshop on setting up a `Computational Chemistry Portal' under the Education Grid project.
To be held on Friday and Saturday, the workshop will feature lectures by acclaimed experts in theoretical chemistry such as Prof M.S. Gopinathan and Dr Mangal Sundar Krishnan (IIT Madras) and Dr C. Venkatesh (IIITM-K).
Announcing this here, Dr K.R. Srivathsan, Director, IIITM-K, said the workshop is part of a series proposed to groom teachers and researchers in the universities and R&D organisations in tracking modern developments in the subject.
Computational chemistry has to be introduced to students in their early college years. Industries such as pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and polymers increasingly make use of computational chemistry these days. Drug synthesis and bio-molecules design profit from this subject.
Universities and colleges need well-established computational facilities to teach this subject. The Education Grid project and IIT Madras are now establishing a Web-accessed Computational Chemistry Portal that all interested scholars and teachers may use. The workshop will train the participants the underlying computational chemistry principles and effective use of the portal for their education and research.
This is the first significant initiative of its kind in the country, Dr Srivathsan said. The Education Grid proposes to steadily build several such computational and information portals in different subjects supported by different premier academic and research institutions in their respective areas of strength.
