Sluggishness hits Coonoor tea sale

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , March 14

ELECTRONIC auctions continued to be disrupted at the tea auctions conducted by the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) here this week when a volume of 9.66-lakh kg was offered for sale.

Auctioneers said those who sold manually got higher prices than those who resorted to electronic auctions. There was some sluggishness in demand with the buyers contending tight cash-flow arising from year-end restrictions. Around 40,000 kgs were sold for over Rs 60 a kg.

Buyers for Russia and CIS markets chose better medium grades, paying up to Rs 47 a kg. Poland chose bolder grades for Rs 42. Iraq bought chosen grades up to Rs 44. Buyers for Pakistan were seen scouting for their choice teas bidding up to Rs 47. There were purchases for Oman at around Rs 60.
