PRASAR Bharati is reconstructing the low-power transmitter (LPT) of Doordarshan (DD) at Car Nicobar Island at a cost of Rs 80 lakh, according to Mr S. Ramaswamy, Chief Engineer (South Zone), All India Radio and Doordarshan, Chennai.
The December 26 tsunami had damaged the transmitter at Car Nicobar.
There are 12 LPTs in various islands of Andaman and Nicobar. Though some of them were hit by tsunami, damage was severe at Car Nicobar.
Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Mr Ramaswamy said that the number of television channels in `DD Direct+' Doordarshan's direct-to-home (DTH) platform will be increased to 40 in the next six months. Currently, `DD Direct+' offers 33 free-to-air TV channels and 12 radio channels.
He said DD's 1,406 terrestrial transmitter cover nearly 90.7 per cent of the area in the country.
The remaining areas, including north-eastern States and some hilly areas, are not being covered by terrestrial transmission.
