FM radio transmitter facility to be set up in Sringeri

SRINGERI, the temple town at Chikmagalur district in Karnataka, is likely to get an FM radio transmitter by the end of next year.
Mr S. Ramaswamy, Chief Engineer (South Zone), All India Radio and Doordarshan, Chennai, told newspersons here on Monday that an FM transmitter with studio facility will be set up in Sringeri. The Rs 4-crore project will be through by the end of next year.
At present, there are 16 AIR stations and 13 FM transmitters in Karnataka, and they cover nearly 97.3 per cent of population in the State.
The establishment of a 10-kW FM transmitter at Gulbarga is also being considered. Mr Ramaswamy said that the studio of Mysore radio station would be revamped in the next one-and-a-half years.
He said Prasar Bharati would also set up a low-power TV transmitter at Mudhol in Bijapur district at a cost of Rs 97 lakh. Apart from this, TV transmitter in Dharwad will be upgraded to 10-kW capacity, having a reach of around 80 km.
The 100-W LPTs at Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada and Gadag districts will be upgraded to 500-W capacity at a cost of Rs 90 lakh each. Work on these LPTs is likely to be completed by next month, he said.
Prasar Bharati has TV production centres at Bangalore and Gulbarga. It has 67 television transmitters, covering 81.7 per cent population in Karnataka. It provides services through 27 TV channels and 214 radio stations in the country, he added.
