Sonia Gandhi arriving tomorrow

Hyderabad , March 14

THE Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance, Ms Sonia Gandhi, is scheduled to have a hectic itinerary during her one-day visit to Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Beginning with laying the foundation stone for the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad, she will inaugurate the National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management (NITHM) in Gachibowli.

Ms Gandhi will leave for Secunderabad, where she will unveil a pylon for the Rajiv Gruhakalpa Urban Housing Project. From there she will round off her visit with a public meeting at the parade grounds.

The NITHM, a Rs 35-crore joint venture between the AP Tourism Development Corporation and Union Ministry of Tourism, would offer graduate and post-graduate courses in hospitality management and tourism.

The Andhra Pradesh Government has allotted 30 acres land, worth Rs 15 crore, free of cost for the institute. The Centre had granted Rs 10.5 crore for the first phase, which was completed last year.

Mr G.S. Rao, Director of NITHM, said the institute has signed a memorandum of understanding with Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University for conducting PG level courses. It is in talks with George Washington University and Cornell University, the two US-based universities renowned in tourism and hospitality management.

The international airport is a Rs 1,418-crore project, being promoted by the GMR Group and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad. It is scheduled to be completed by 2008.

Naming of the airport after late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi sparked a controversy in the State, with some sections, including the main Opposition Telugu Desam Party, demanding that the airport be named after the former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, who passed away recently.
