New Hyderabad airport to be named after Rajiv Gandhi

New Delhi , March 14

THE Union Cabinet today approved naming of the proposed greenfield airport near Hyderabad as Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

The decision follows an earlier Cabinet approval on December 15 for a concession agreement for construction of the new airport at Shamsabad, around 20 km from the existing Begumpet airport in the city.

The airport, expected to cost Rs 1,394 crore in the first phase, is to be set up by a special purpose vehicle called Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (HIAL) in which GMR Infrastructure Ltd would have 63 per cent stake, the other equity partners being Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad (11 per cent), the Andhra Pradesh Government, and the Airports Authority of India (13 per cent each).
