THE committee looking into the security issues of the direct-to-home (DTH) broadcasting has suggested that the Government set up its own monitoring station not just for this service but for all the satellite channels beaming into the country.
The Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr S. Jaipal Reddy, informed the Rajya Sabha in his written reply that the Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Ltd, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry, has been asked to prepare a detailed proposal. He said that the committee was set up in August 2004 after a public interest litigation was filed at the Delhi High Court apprehending the possibility of misusing the DTH services for airing pornographic channels and for secret anti-national messaging particularly in the context of the situation in Jammu & Kashmir and North-East.
He, further, said that there is no proposal to review the DTH guidelines and so far five companies had applied for DTH licence, with licence being granted to one.In a response to another query, Mr Reddy said that the Government is considering allowing investment by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) in the print media within the 26 per cent ceiling allowed for foreign direct investment. He said that representations have been received that FIIs be permitted subject to ceiling of 26 per cent and this is still under consideration.
