Australia expects 1-lakh Indian tourists by 2008

AUSTRALIA hopes to attract one lakh Indian tourists annually by 2008, the Regional Manager, South and Southeast Asia, Tourism Australia, Ms Maggie White, said here today.

"Australia welcomed 55,000 Indians last year, which was an increase of 22 per cent over the previous year. We hope to have at least one lakh Indian visitors by 2008," Ms White said. Currently, an Indian tourist spends around A$3,000 per trip and the average stay varies from 10-14 days, Australia Tourism officials said.

The primary market for travel to Australia is from Mumbai and Delhi, although there has been an increase in traffic from cities such as Bangalore and Pune, officials said.

Recently, the Australian airline, Qantas started operating non-stop flights three times a week on the Mumbai-Sydney sector.
