Chennai , March 16 With the Tamil Nadu Government identifying tier-II towns for encouraging infrastructure for information technology companies, major projects are in the pipeline in Coimbatore. Moving the demand for grants for the departments under his charge, the Information Technology Minister, Mr D. Jayakumar, said in the Assembly today that Tidel, the joint venture between TIDCO (Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation) and ELCOT (Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu), has evinced interest in setting up a Rs 41 crore information technology park at Coimbatore. ELCOT has identified over six acres land on the Coimbatore Medical College campus suitable for a 2,50,000 sq ft information technology park. The proposal is an outcome of a study by the State Government, ELCOT and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) aimed at promoting Coimbatore as a destination of choice information technology and allied industries. ELCOT and Bharathiar University are also jointly developing a 109-acre research and development park, BU-ELCOT City, within the university's campus, Mr Jayakumar said. The Government is taking steps to set up information technology parks in other towns such as Tiruchi, Madurai and Hosur. It will work with the CII to conduct a feasibility report to identify suitable locations for such investments in partnership with the private sector. Software exports from the State are set to touch Rs 10,000 crore in 2004-05.
