Residence Hotel's convention centre booked for 3 months

Tunia Cherian George

Mumbai , March 16

FOR a city lacking in adequate conference and meeting facilities, the inauguration of a convention centre at the Residence Hotel in suburban Powai should add to the available space.

According to the Resident Manager at the Residence, Mr Prashant Joshi, the centre, built specifically for conferences, weddings and launch functions, has been hosting events every day since it opened its doors rather quietly last December.

It has been booked for the next three months.

It is also popular with companies holding training programmes for their middle-level managers.

Built at a cost of around Rs 10 crore, the convention centre is owned by the Kishore Raheja group.

According to the Managing Director, Mr Nikhil Raheja, the convention centre has two ballrooms — the Crystal Ballroom and the Emerald Ballroom — each with a capacity to host a reception of about 600 people.

The two ballrooms can each be divided into three halls, with a capacity of 220 people in a reception format.

Besides, it also has a smaller meeting room called the Sapphire, which has the capacity to accommodate 100 people in a reception, and a lawn and terrace for outdoor events.

The lack of meetings, facilities, convention and exhibitions (MICE) facilities has frequently hampered event organisers in the city.

According to an official with Wizcraft Events here, the problem gets accentuated in the peak season, from October to November, when it becomes necessary for them to book their venues well in advance.
