Viruses Trend Micro sees steady rise in malware L. N. Revathy
Coimbatore , March 16 ARE junk mails on the rise? It's not surprising , considering anti-virus firm Trend Micro's detection of a steady rise in malicious codes (software designed to damage a system such as a virus or a Trojan horse) since December 2004. The firm has documented 3,185 new malicious software (malware) between January 21 and February 20, which is said to be almost 50 per cent more than the earlier month's 2,236. What is curious, however, is the firm's declaration of a BAGLE strain as the first alert, both for 2004 and 2005. On January 27, 2005, Trend Micro declared the first alert for the year a new variant of the prominent BAGLE family of mass mailers. Trend Micro's World Tracking Centre has recorded 20,000 infections of the BAGLE variant, making this worm the tenth most prevalent malware in the last one month. Two more alerts were declared in the following weeks, one for the BROPIA variant and another for the MYDOOM variant, bringing the number of alerts to three so far. The first quarter has generally been found to be the most sensitive period, during whichthe highest number of alerts is registered. Last year, there were two more alerts by February-end compared to the corresponding period of 2005 and the first quarter recorded 12 alerts. Trend Micro plans alerts for new malware in the coming months. "Countless malware have been known to take advantage of worldwide events, festive dates, famous personalities and political propaganda to widen infection reach and recognition", states a release from Trend Micro.
