Consortia set up to fight tobacco virus

HYDERABAD: A global consortium to tackle crop losses due to Tobacco Streak Virus (TSV), which affects groundnuts and sunflowers, has been constituted. The virus has been causing problems in South India and has gradually spread to other regions.

The consortia will be supported by the US AID-funded Agricultural Biotechnology Support Project, which, in turn, will managed by the Cornell University, the US in association with Sathguru Management Consultants, Hyderabad.

The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, the US, led by Dr Roger Beachy, is expected to provide technology support. The other members of the consortia are the International Crop Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics , Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University, Mahyco Research Foundation and the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources.
