Sonia unveils housing scheme for urban poor in AP

THE Chairperson of the National Advisory Council, Ms Sonia Gandhi, has unveiled the pylon marking the launch of `Rajeev Gruhakalpa' programme of Andhra Pradesh here on Wednesday. The programme endeavours to provide affordable housing for the urban poor.

As a part of this programme, the State Government proposes to provide the necessary land and onetime infrastructure facilities such as water, electricity, sewerage and roads free of cost. The cost of providing infrastructure per unit would be Rs 25,000.

According to a press release, the Government has set a target of providing one-lakh houses in Hyderabad urban agglomeration area and one-lakh houses in other municipal areas of the State during 2005-06. The unit cost of the house was estimated at Rs 75,000.

Of this, the beneficiary has to share ten per cent cost, while the banks would finance the rest at an interest rate of 8 per cent. The State Level Bankers' Committee has approved the scheme.

The Government proposes to involve reputed non-governmental organisations in its implementation. The release said 41,000 applications were so far received in Hyderabad district and 47,000 applications came from Rangareddy district.
