BHARATIYA Udyog Vyapar Mandal (BUVM) on Wednesday called for a 72-hour bandh starting March 30 against the introduction of value-added-tax (VAT) from April 1.

``We have called a complete trade bandh for 72 hours from March 30 to April 1 all over the country to oppose the VAT implementation,'' Mr Shyam Behari Mishra, BUVM National President, told reporters today.

While Mr Mishra apprehended that VAT would result in price escalation to the tune of 10-15 per cent, the VAT panel has been taking the position that the proposed new system would not be inflationary.

The Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers on VAT had categorically said VAT would be implemented from April 1, even if Uttar Pradesh does not fall in line.
