IA to offer more seats on southern routes

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi , March 18

INDIAN Airlines (IA) is to not only offer more seats on several routes that it operates in South India but also more non-stop flights from major cities there to South-East Asia.

The operation on the new routes as also availability of more seats on some sectors is to begin from the end of the month. The airline is to offer more seats on the Chennai-Hyderabad-Chennai and Chennai-Bangalore-Chennai sectors by operating a larger Airbus A-320 aircraft on these routes.

Besides, the airline will also offer non-stop flights from these three cities to Bangkok from this month-end. Sources told Business Line that the airline is to offer a non-stop flight twice a week on the Bangalore-Bangkok-Bangalore and Hyderabad-Bangkok-Hyderabad sectors. The airline will also operate a non-stop flight three times a week on the Chennai-Bangkok-Chennai and Hyderabad-Singapore-Hyderabad sectors. All the flights are to be operated with Airbus A-320 aircraft.

The Government had in February this year allowed not only the private sector airlines— Jet Airways and Air Sahara — to operate to the South East Asian region but also gave the nod to both IA and Air India to operate more flights to region.

At that time, official sources had indicated that the state-owned airlines were likely to be allowed to operate as many flights as they seek permission for. While AI has sought 603 additional seats between India and Singapore during the summer, IA has sought 435 additional seats. Similarly, IA has sought 2,030 additional seats on the India-Malaysia route while AI has sought 1,206 more seats.

Meanwhile, IA also plans to operate a third daily flight on the Mumbai-Kolkata-Mumbai sector from the month-end.
