Aquaculture `Phase out antibiotics from aquaculture' Our Bureau
Kochi , March 20 A three-day international symposium has urged the fishing community to adopt a zero-level antibiotic usage to sustain aquaculture production and maintain exports. The symposium was on `Improved Sustainability of Fish Production Systems and Appropriate Technologies for Utilisation.' Based on the deliberations of the 140 scientific contributions, itrecommended that the use of probiotics and chemicals in aquaculture must be brought under strict evaluation and a regulatory regime. Simultaneously, research to map the vast microbial resources of India must be speeded up, as microbial products can help control disease problems in aquaculture. The symposium noted that as antibiotics arecounter-productive, a zero-level antibiotic use should be practiced in future, which will conform with with the restrictions imposed by importers. The deep-sea shrimp resources of the Indian Excusive Economic Zone are vulnerable to over-exploitation and fishermen, processors and the exporting community have been cautioned to enforce regulations for sustainable exploitation. The symposium stressed the need for adopting sustainable practices in capture, culture and marketing for the development of the fisheries sector. Delivering the special address at the the symposium, which was organised by the School of Industrial Fisheries of the Cochin University of Science and Technology, Dr M. K. R. Nair, Fisheries Development Commissioner, highlighted the new provision of the revised marine fishery policy of India.
