`Education sans attitude does not count for much'

Our Bureau

Chennai , March 20

EQUIPPING oneself with education is an "absolute waste" if attitude doesn't come into play. Attitude is everything to do with determination and a burning desire to succeed, about learning from oneself, not about age, looks or strength, said Mr Regu G. Ambalam, Director (International Admissions), Raffles LaSalle, Mumbai, at a national-level day-long workshop on Personality Development organised jointly by the Sri Sai Ram Institute of Management Studies, Tambaram, and BL Club here.

In a session on `Attitude Development,' he described attitude as a "turbo-charged, 10-cylinder engine" to which everyone had the key. To succeed in life and work, one has to have the right attitude to manage other people's attitudes as well. Management is about understanding people and helping them be successful as well, he said.

Stating that his mandatory stint in the Singapore Army taught him a lot about adapting one's attitude to the circumstances, Mr Ambalam said there was a lesson to be learnt in the fact that dinosaurs became extinct because they failed to adapt. Gaining other people's trust and earning their respect is takes attitude, he said.

In his session on Imparting Leadership Qualities, Mr R. Guhan, Country Manager, JobsDB.com, said every single person had to wake up and tell oneself, "If not me, who else can win? If not now, when?" The best leaders are those who have set ambitions and march towards those goals. A leader has to be a listener, should know how to execute projects and delegate responsibility and has to be an action-oriented person. The leader should be able to make the mission and vision of his project percolate into his team, should direct them on to the right path, should know how to evaluate situations and on top of all, be a role model, Mr Guhan said.

Addressing a session on Emotional Intelligence, Mr T. Suresh, Senior Vice-President (HR), TAFE, dwelt on the importance of the emotional quotient (EQ) and on ethos, pathos and logos in EQ. Dr K. Maran, Professor and Head of the institute, and Dr S. Seetharaman, Principal, Sri Sai Ram Engineering College, were present at the workshop.
