TDP walkout over local body election issue

Hyderabad , March 21

THE members of the opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) staged a walkout from the Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Monday in protest against the delay in conducting elections to the local bodies in the State.

The leader of the Opposition, Mr Chandrababu Naidu, alleged that though the Constitution stipulated that elections to the local bodies must be conducted every five years, the ruling Congress party was taking advantage of the minor lacunae in the law and postponing the elections.

The Minister for Municipal Administration, Mr K. Ranga Rao, denied the charges and said the State Government was keen on holding the elections.

The Minister for Finance and Legislative Affairs, Mr K. Rosaiah, intervened to say that the Constitution stipulated holding of elections within six months of the completion of term and assured the House that the Government would comply with the stipulation.

Earlier, replying to a question raised by TDP legislators during the question hour, the Municipal Administration Minister said the Government had introduced a new nodal system called Rapid Assessment Feedback of Towns in December last year to assess basic services such as water supply, sanitation, drainage and street lighting in the urban areas.
