World Bank-aided health project launched

THE World Bank assisted Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project was inaugurated on Monday.
According to an official press release, the Rs 597.15-crore project aimed at upgrading public health facilities and infrastructure in the State will be implemented over the next five years.
The World Bank's contribution is Rs 502.94 crore with the State Government chipping in with Rs 94.21 crore. The Government and non-Government organisations will implement the project.
The objective is to improve facilities and operations of the Government hospitals and health centres; provide better treatment to those suffering from cancer, heart disease and diabetes; and expand preventive treatment.
Ambulances will also be provided to each of the 385 panchayat unions in the State.
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa, while inaugurating this project, also launched the project Web site www.tnhsp.org, the release said.
Mr Rachid Bennessoud, Operation Advisor, World Bank, New Delhi, Dr Preeti Kudesia, Task Team Leader, Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project, World Bank, New Delhi, were present on the occasion, the release said.
