Taxation Japan urged to reduce withholding tax Our Bureau
Chennai , March 21 THE Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, has urged Japan to reduce withholding tax, which is similar to tax deducted at source. India has reduced withholding tax to 10 per cent from 20 per cent. "I now look forward to similar response from the Japanese Government," he said in his inaugural address at Indiasoft 2005, a two-day event on information, communication and technology organised by the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC). With an estimated market size of $80 billion, Japan is the world's second largest IT market after the US. Looking at the immense potential that the Japanese IT market offers for serving the world market in the areas of IT, including embedded technology, the Communication and Information Technology Ministry has taken a conscious decision of enabling Indian IT professionals to learn the Japanese language. Under the programme of learning Japanese language initiated by ESC, the Indian IT human resource is able to gain proficiency in the language at the JLPT level 3 or higher. "Our Government is committed to continue the programme so that we are in a position to meet the Japanese IT market requirements," he said. "Japan and India can work together and leverage our mutual strengths in this important sector," he said. According to an ESC release, Japan is the third largest destination for India's computer software exports. During 2003-04, exports to Japan were worth Rs 2,070 crore, which worked out to be 3.57 of India's total software exports. A 27-member Japanese delegation is participating in Indiasoft 2005 to explore relationship with Indian firms.
