`Drop boxes' in banks

Bidding good-bye to the practice of accepting `clearance' cheques, along with the covering challans, banks are now insisting that customers put them in the `drop boxes' provided for the purpose. Accountability has become the main casualty, in the process and several instances of delayed credits and malpractice have been reported.

Banks can introduce challans of a particular colour for facilitating easy segregation of cheques intended for fund transfer within the same bank and accord them the needed priority. Restoration of the old practice will provide immense relief to the aggrieved customers.
