Cotton crop estimate raised to 232 lakh bales

THE Cotton Advisory Board (CAB) on Tuesday raised its crop estimate to 232 lakh bales (of 170 kg) for the current season October 2004-September 05 from 213 lakh bales madeon November 22.

"Total acreage this season has been same at 89.70 lakh hectares from the initial estimate of 89.69 lakh hectares," Mr Subodh Kumar, Textiles Commissioner, told newsmen.

Acreage in Haryana has increased from 6.26 lakh hectares to 6.50 lakh hectares. However, the area in Punjab has fallen from 5.49 lakh hectares to 5.08 lakh hectares, he said.

"Imports of 5 lakh bales have already arrived and one lakh more bales are expected this season. Export is estimated at 12 lakh bales," he said.

For 2003-04, total acreage under cotton cultivation decreased marginally to 76.30 lakh hectares from the earlier estimated 77.85 lakh hectares.

According to the State-wise production estimated by CAB, Punjab is likely to harvest 16.50 lakh bales, Haryana 15 lakh bales, Rajasthan 10.50 lakh bales, Gujarat 62 lakh bales, Maharashtra 52 lakh bales, Madhya Pradesh 16 lakh bales, Andhra Pradesh 32.50 lakh bales, Karnataka 9 lakh bales, Tamil Nadu 5.5 lakh bales and others one lakh bale.

CAB's estimate for the season 2004-05 sees a carryover stock of 21 lakh bales. With production at 232 lakh bales and imports estimated at 6 lakh bales, the total availability will be 259 lakh bales, up 20 lakh bales.

On the demand side, mill consumption is seen at 168 lakh bales, consumption by SSI units 17 lakh bales, non-mill consumption 13 lakh bales and exports 12 lakh bales, bringing the total demand to 210 lakh bales.
