Ms Godrej joined hands with Husain to create a museum for art and cinema in the city. The museum will hold paintings, a library, a 50-seat theatre and a cafe. The museum's activity will be expanded to include an annual film festival. - A. Roy Chowdhury
Hyderabad , March 22 FOLLOWING the Western trend of corporate houses supporting art and cinema houses, the Godrej group joined hands with painter M.F. Husain to back Cinema Ghar, a museum for art and cinema. Godrej will take care of the expenditure to run the museum, opened by Husain seven years ago. The facility houses a library of 2,000 books, a 50-seat theatre and café. Besides, it showcases masterpieces, including Husain's latest series on World War II. Welcoming the gesture, Husain said that it was quite common in advanced countries for corporates to support such ventures. "I hope this is a good beginning." The museum is aimed at finding new talent in the fields of arts and films, said Husain and Ms Parameshwar Godrej. "We will organise workshops, lectures and discussions on various aspects of art and films," they said, announcing the alliance. They, however, clarified that it was not a place to sell paintings. "It is not a gallery. We will not allow people to sell here. It is just a platform to help the talented artists and film-makers show their works," Husain said. He added that the centre would also organise an annual national film festival focusing on short films. "Films of two-minute duration sometimes prove that they are as powerful as three-hour epics." "The festival is in the pipeline," Ms Godrej said, refusing to divulge the financial aspect of the alliance. Marking the new alliance, the museum will shortly host a workshop to create awareness on AIDS.
