Data services to grow exponentially: Minister

New Delhi , March 22

THE Minister of State for Communication and IT, Dr Shakeel Ahmed, on Tuesday said that the telecom sector will require investments worth Rs 3,00,000 crore to meet the targets set for offering broadband and 150 million new telephone lines over the next three years.

Inaugurating the Convergence India 2005, Dr Ahmed said that data services are expected to grow exponentially with the convergence of technology.

"One such proof is that India is serving as a major hub for business process outsourcing centre for the rest of the world. This sector has witnessed an unprecedented growth of over 67 per cent with an annual turnover of $3.6 billion," the Minister said.

The Minister also invited telecom equipment companies to set up manufacturing facilities in the country in the wake of huge growth in telecom subscriber base in the country.

Three hundred companies from 25 countries including Ericsson, UTStarcom, Motorola and France Telecom are participating in the three-day exhibition. Telecommunication authorities, equipment vendors and service providers from the Central and the State Government are also taking part in the event.

Seminars focusing on the broadband architecture based on access technologies, content, digital entertainment and next wave of services over Internet protocol are also being held.
