Air Deccan to sell tickets through HPCL outlets

Our Bureau

Bangalore , March 22

AIR Deccan on Tuesday signed a deal with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd to sell airline tickets through the petrol stations of the oil company.

Initially, the facility will be rolled out in 10 outlets in Bangalore and later 2,000 more will be added across the country in a year's time.

HPCL's Executive Director for retail, Mr S.P. Chaudhary, told newspersons that the retail outlets would get 5 per cent commission for selling these tickets. The customer can either pay by cash or through credit cards or even through HPCL branded cards. Each retail outlet will also need a computer to log on to the Web site of Air Deccan to book the tickets.

The Air Deccan Managing Director, Capt G.R. Gopinath, said vending airline tickets through petrol stations would benefit those who do not have immediate access to either the Internet, travel agents or even the airport. He said such facilities ensure that delivery system bottlenecks are minimised. He said about 40 per cent of the ticketing was carried out through the Internet.

Capt Gopinath said the airline had flown one million passengers since it started operations nearly two years ago. The airline expects to fly three million more passengers by the end of 2005.
