Letters VAT implementation
This refers to the editorial, "Cracks in VAT system" (Business Line, March 23). The fact that political considerations weigh more than economic ones, is made clearer by the decision of the BJP ruled states not to implement VAT from April 1, in spite of national consensus on the matter. The Central Government should have formulated clear norms for phasing out the CST. With hardly a week to go before the launch, the Central Government will have to plunge into brisk action, if it really wants VAT to be come into force. The Finance Minister has to personally assure State Governments that their interests would be kept in mind. C. P. Velayudhan Nair Kochi
